What is The Ten Word Review?

The Ten Word Review is a place where you can review anything you want. The only proviso is that you have to do this in exactly ten words.

About three years ago I had an idea that if I restricted myself to a certain number of words, I might be able to actually get around to reviewing things. Ten seemed like a nice round number, so that's what it stuck as. I created a community over on LiveJournal, and whilst that did well in its own modest way, it wasn't particularly easy to find older reviews that had been written. So, finally, this site was created. Over the first couple of months of existence four times the number of reviews were written on this site compared with the older LiveJournal community.

Why 10 words?

Because that's the way it is. Having a certain number of words set as the base for your review means that you have to get creative with what you're writing.

What makes up "10 words"?

In the world of ten word reviews, a hyphenated word counts as one single word. Hyphens on their own don't count as word, but a + does. Don't runwordstogether like this - it'll only lead to people rating your review badly.

How do I find out if something has been already reviewed?

Search, and you will find. At the top right (ish) of every page is a search box - use that and you'll be given a list of reviews which have your search terms in their titles. It really is that simple!

What are the categories?

In the "Write a review" box that you write your review in is a list of all available categories. If one is missing that you think should be there, leave a note in the "Site Talk" section of the site.

How do I know I'm in the right category?

Anything to do with the site should be placed in the "Site Talk" category. The only exception to that is if you're really reviewing the site, in which case you should write a review about TheTenWordReview.com in the Websites category.

What if I mess up my review?

If you've written something incorrectly in the text of your review, then simply click on the "Edit" link that sits at the bottom of all your reviews and simply make the changes that you need to make. Be careful though - the system will only let you change your review a certain amount from what you originally wrote!

If, instead, you mistitled or miscategorised your review, then leave a note in the "Site Talk" section of the site, and an Admin will sort out the problem for you.

How do I register?

Click on the Sign Up link at the top of any page on the site!

How do I change my password?

Visit the Edit your profile link that you'll see at the top of any page whilst you're logged in. Then, change your password by entering your old password and your new password in the boxes at the bottom of the page.

How do I change my user icon?

First, you need to have an icon available somewhere else on the web. This might be a Flickr icon, one you use on LiveJournal, or maybe even an image you use on MySpace. Right click on the image you want to use and select "View Image". Then copy the URL of the image you're shown. Then add this URL into the "Icon URL" box on the Edit Profile page. Your icon should then be magically changed for you.

What are those little smiley faces next to people's reviews?

Those show how you have rated that review. Whichever one is coloured is the rating you gave. Clicking on one of the smiley faces will change your rating of that review.

How do I rate someone's review?

Clicking on one of the smiley faces next to a review will rate it. You have to be logged in to do this.

But why would I want to rate reviews?

Rating reviews does a few things. First off, it enables reviews to be sorted by how good they are - if a review has been rated "liked" by three people, then it stands to reason that it's a better review than one that was rated "mediocre" by the same number of people. Likewise, if people have rated a review "terrible" then it should probably be hidden from view since it just isn't very good!

Another reason for rating reviews is that it allows the system to see who writes your favourite reviews, and then adds those people to the "Fave Users" section on your user profile page.

The final reason why you should be rating reviews is that the more you rate the higher up in the list of "Best Contributors" you'll rise. So, get out there and start rating things!

How do I not get "terrible" ratings?

Just write good reviews! Seriously though, just play by the rules and don't runwordstogether. That's a definite no-no to me, and will get a bad rating from me every time.

What if I find a spammy/offensive review?

Rate it "terrible" and leave a message in the Site Talk section of the site.

What if I have more questions?

Ask away in the Site Talk section and someone will answer it for you.
